Patchwork Tree Mini Quilt (Quilt 4)

Over at Ellison Lane Quilts, there's a mini quilt challenge going on.  Even though I've been swamped this month with other projects, a trip and moving, I decided to participate to give me something a little relaxing to do.  For awhile, I was stumped on what to create for the swap until I came up with this design.

Finished size - 24 1/2" by 24 1/2"

The quilt is made with all of Denyse Schmidt's Daisy Mae line for Joann's.  I thought they were nice colors for a Woodland quilt.

This quilt took quite awhile as all of the pieces are freezer paper applique and hand sewn onto the quilt.  Then, the whole quilt was hand quilted.  I think that the fact that this quilt is 90% hand done, is what makes it special.

This hexagon owl was the inspiration for this whole quilt - so cute!

I'm quite in love with this hedgehog as well (oops, spare threads).  Those points on the tree trunk were fun to get so perfect with it being hand applique.

For a finishing touch, I did a rainbow hand quilted edge on the outside border.  I used pearl cotton size 5 (that's all I could get on short notice in all these colors).

For the back, I used some of the Ghastlies tree print - very appropriate.  I pulled this and the binding (Katie Jump Rope) from my stash.  I also added loops that match the binding so that this mini can be hung on the wall.

Well, I'm really happy with this quilt, and maybe if I'm lucky (which I'm usually not), I'll snag one of the sweet prizes from the Mini Quilt Challenge.

  4. Very cute! I don't know a whole lot about quilting, so I was wondering - when you say the circle leaves were freezer paper appliques, does that mean you ironed the edges under the freezer paper to get that nice clean edge then hand sewed them on? It all looks lovely - I do like that rainbow stitching, too. Congratulations on the beautiful finish! :) C

  6. Love your entry! I did my entry all by hand, too. I was questioning myself halfway through with all the stitching, I was afraid I wouldn't have it done! The tree looks amazing and I love the owl!
